Red meat is essential for your overall body health, despite being associated with high level of cholesterol and other health problems. On the Paleo diet, the consumption of red meat is highly recommended and encouraged. But are there risks of eating red meat? To help you understand more, this article provides pros and cons of consuming eating red meats.

Pros of eating red meat

Rich in Vitamin B-12: Red meat contains high level vitamin B-12 which is the most complex form of vitamin and can also be found from animal products. This vitamin is required for the formation of red blood cells and building of DNA. It makes the cells in the body function properly. The vitamin is also essential for boosting the functioning of the circulatory and nervous system.

Contains high level zinc and magnesium: Zinc is an important mineral that helps in the development of bone tissues as well as cell division, regeneration of tissues, and brain health. Zinc found in the red meat also plays an essential role in sexual hormone secretion and ensuring that the body has successful balance of valuable vitamins and amino acids. Lack of this essential mineral can lead to stunted growth and development not only in children, but also adults. In addition, red meat has high level magnesium that ensures proper functioning of the cardiovascular system, brain, kidneys, liver and enhances bone strength.

Assists in the absorption of calcium in the body: Red meat has high levels of vitamin D, which helps in absorption of calcium from foods. Calcium is also essential for the growth and maintenance of teeth and bones. The presence of this vitamin in red meat, make it essential in normal regulation of activities of the nervous system, blood clotting and proper functioning of the heart.

Rich in iron: Red meat contain high amount of iron that ensures proper transportation of oxygen to the cells. It helps in the formation of hemoglobin and effective functioning of the muscles.

Cons of eating red meat

Increases risk of cancer: Red meat can increase your risk of developing cancer. The high fat content in the meat act as a contributing factor in the incidence of estrogen and progesterone sensitive breast cancer. The hormones involved in production of red meat may also increase your risk of cancer.

Diabetes: The higher the level of red meat that you consume, the higher the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Processed red meat may contain preservatives that affect the cell in the pancreases responsible for the production of insulin. In addition, the cooking process leads to chemical changes to the red meat that can cause insulin resistance in your tissues or cells.

Cardiovascular complications: The animal based dietary fats like the one in the red meat can increase your risk of heart complications such as stroke and heart disease. They add saturated fats and cholesterol to your diet, which leads to accumulation of a fatty substance called plaque to your artery walls. This leads to a condition known as atherosclerosis, which makes your heart work extra hard to pump the blood through the blood vessels. The condition increases your risk of developing a heart attack.

To avoid the above side effects avoid processed red meat and ensure you eat the right amount in your diet.
