Yoga and a Paleo Lifestyle

If you have embarked on a Paleo lifestyle, good on you! You probably already know that a Paleo lifestyle not only involves a diet rich in animal proteins, nuts, fruits, and vegetables, it also involves an active lifestyle that includes plenty of sunshine and rest. Being active doesn’t necessarily mean jogging five miles every day and lifting weights. While these forms of physical activity are good for some people, those who are living a Paleo lifestyle may find these activities do not suit them. Yoga is a great form of exercise and stretching for anyone embarking on this diet and way of life. We’ll take a look at why below.

How did cavemen stay fit?

Our ancestors did not have treadmills and weight machines. Instead, they maintained their fitness level by running after animals when hunting, gathering fruits and veggies, and carrying heavy things. These forms of physical activity allowed them to burn calories, even at rest. Cavemen weren’t overweight and out of shape because they got plenty of exercise. Stretching, however, was a different story! This is where yoga comes into play for those living a Paleo lifestyle.

Benefits of yoga

Yoga offers many benefits that can greatly improve your health and well-being. One of the most prominent benefits is increased flexibility. Though this certainly does not come from just one or even a few classes, you will eventually begin to do poses that you never thought you could do. Your muscles will gradually loosen and your posture will improve due to the increased flexibility. Yoga is especially helpful for those who have tight hip and hamstrings and for people who sit at a desk all day.

Another benefit of yoga is improved circulation. More oxygen is sent to your cells during yoga poses, especially inverted poses. They encourage the circulation of freshly oxygenated blood. There are also poses that involved twisting, and they allow fresh, oxygenated blood to flow when the twists are released.

Yoga will also help you to build strength just like a caveman. Many of the postures involve you lifting the weight of your own body, and this is no easy task. Many poses such as handstands and plank pose strengthen your arm muscles as well your bones. Yoga also helps to take your joints through their full range of motion, aiding in the prevention of arthritis. It also helps to bring fresh nutrients to the cartilage in your joints.

Yoga will also help you to sleep like a caveman too! It will help you to improve your sleep quality and increase the number of hours you sleep every night. Yoga will also aid in eliminating depression and high blood pressure.

Keep in mind that yoga shouldn’t hurt. While you may feel some minor discomfort during some poses, you should not feel any pain. Instead, practicing yoga should feel good for your body and for your mind. And yoga definitely compliments a Paleo lifestyle because it leads to health and vitality.
