Like any other tea, pu-erh amassed from the Camellia sinensis tree, and the leaves of pu-erh tea variety are broad leaves. These broad leaves produce a higher oxidation level when the tea dissolved. This is believed to produce the health benefits of pu-erh tea.

Here are some health benefits of pu-erh tea:

Lowers Cardiovascular Risk

Pu-erh tea comes in different varieties such as raw or dissolved and refined. Many studies conducted on both types of pu-erh tea to find out the health benefits of the tea. One such study tested both raw and dissolved variety of pu-erh tea on rat blood lipids. It concluded that dissolved pu-erh tea lowered the lipids or fats in the rat blood. The groundwork in the study concluded that pu-erh tea could cut the risk of cardiovascular disorders as it can lower the blood lipids.

Antioxidant and Prevents Cancer

Teas made from Camellia Sinensis plant include antioxidants like catechins that help to prevent cancer. Green tea or less processed tea carries the highest amount of catechins. Raw pu-erh tea, which is not processed is known as green tea. Pu-erh tea is processed and allowed to dissolve in the black tea that also includes catechins. Catechins in pu-erh tea grip onto the elements of oxidation in the blood and demolish the process of oxidation, thereby preventing cancer.

Pu-erh tea helps to regulate body weight by preventing obesity and similar disorders. According to a study conducted by the Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, pu-erh tea showed a greater ability to regulate and lower the body weight than any other tea. The study found out that the compounds that had the anti-obesity effects in pu-erh tea were catechins, caffeine, and theanine. The study also showed that pu-erh tea reduced the fat content in the liver.

Reduces Heart Disease

Kunming Medical College in China conducted a study consisting of 86 patients with remarkably high level of cholesterol. It showed that pu-erh tea is highly effective in reducing cholesterol levels and protecting the health of the heart. The study distinguished the effects of pu-erh tea with the ones of PCIB, a cholesterol reducing drug. The result showed almost 65 percent reduction in blood cholesterol levels while the PCIB drug takers showed 66 percent reduction.

Although pu-erh tea has some good health benefits, it also has some side effects that can damage your health as it contains caffeine and other elements. Stomach upset, gastric ulcer, may be a problem especially if you are a new drinker. Do not forget that pu-erh tea is still a variety that needs more detailed studies and research.
