If you have just started the Paleo diet, you may have already planned your food menus for meals. You have stocked your fridge and pantry with grass-fed meats, wild-caught fish, eggs, nuts, and fresh fruits and vegetables. You have gotten rid of all processed foods and products with refined sugar. You’re on your way to looking great with the Paleo diet!
But what do you drink on the Paleo diet? What beverages are off-limits? Here’s our list of Paleo-friendly beverages (and which ones to stay away from!):
Water- It should come as no surprise that water is the best choice when it comes to Paleo beverages. Actually, this goes for any diet at all! You should drink lots of water. In fact, too much is not a bad thing at all. It’s better to drink too much water than not enough. (It can wreak havoc on your bladder, though!) Water does not contain any calories, additives, or vitamins. It quenches your thirst and helps you to live. It’s the beverage of choice for cavemen! We recommend that you not drink water out of plastic bottles because they are very wasteful and bad for the environment.
Herbal tea- You can enjoy herbal tea as much as you’d like on the Paleo diet. This includes teas such as ginger, peppermint, chamomile, nettle leaf, and spearmint. As long as they are free of caffeine and they don’t have any added sugar, you can drink as much tea as you want. Plus, tea has antioxidants and offers benefits such as improved digestion.
Fruit juice- Here’s where added sugars can become a problem. Many brands of fruit juice contain extra sugar and other ingredients that you don’t need. If you must drink fruit juice, make sure it is 100% juice with no additives, and drink it in small quantities. You can always juice your fruits (and veggies) yourself. Remember that it is always best to eat your fruit instead of drink it. However, fruit juice once in a while won’t hurt. You can even try diluting it with a little water.
Coffee- While it’s easy for us to tell you to give up coffee, we know how wonderful that cup of joe in the morning is. If you limit it to one cup in the morning, we see nothing wrong with coffee. But more than one cup every day can result in unstable blood sugar and subsequent low energy level.
Milk- Milk is not part of the Paleo diet because it is a dairy product. Milk was also not a beverage or product that cavemen had access to. Plus, most dairy products are pasteurized and homogenized, which could create health problems.
Wine- While alcohol consumption is not recommended on the Paleo diet, it’s okay to have a glass of red wine every so often. (By the way, a glass of wine is about 5 ounces.) Remember that moderation is key!
