If you’re starting a Paleo lifestyle, it can take a lot of adjustment in the beginning. The Paleo lifestyle involves not just your diet, but exercise too. It incorporates a great deal of movement in the form of spurts of energy, just like a caveman. Think about what a caveman did in his time: He hunted animals for meat, which involved running, capturing, and killing. He preyed upon many of his meals and then took swift physical action. This physical activity along with his diet kept the caveman lean and trim. This is why you have never seen an overweight caveman depiction! Fat caveman simply did not exist because their genetic makeup did not allow for that.
Nowadays, the story is much different. Many of us work at desks and at our computers, sitting down all day. We go home and sit in front of the television (and eat carbs!) But we all know that moving is one of the most important things we can do to live a longer, healthier life. Do you think cavemen sat in front of the computer all day? No way! They were always on the go and on the move, ready to hunt and gather their next meal.
Here are some guidelines on how to exercise like a caveman while you’re on the Paleo diet:
Sprint. Running very fast was the biggest source of exercise for cavemen. They had no choice but to sprint if they wanted to eat that night! Running fast reduced their body fat and increased their muscles mass. Take note that sprinting is different from jogging. Sprinting involves short bursts of physical exertion, more so than running or jogging. It also involves periods of rest mixed with bout of activity, which has proven to be more effective for losing weight than other forms of exercise. Sprinting greatly increases your cardiovascular system and immune system because it is a form of high-intensity interval training.
Lift weights. Now, we don’t mean trying to become the Heavyweight Champion of the World. But you should really strive to do some serious lifting at least once a week. Designing a strength-training program involves an understanding of homeostasis, which basically means your body is resistant to change. It wants to stay the same. It’s your goal to change that. Using weights will also help you to raise your metabolism so that you can burn calories even at rest as well as greatly improve your energy levels and mood.
Strengthen your core. When your core is weak, you are prone to injuries and problems in your back, hips, and shoulders. Strengthening your core will also strengthen other muscles, especially if you live a sedentary lifestyle. Cavemen had strong cores that helped them to perform daily tasks with ease.
Engage in low-aerobic play activities. Cavemen didn’t always sprint and lift heavy things. They also walked in meadows to gather plants to eat, and swam for fun. They didn’t sit in front of a television. They were always on the move, except when they were sleeping. You can engage in low-aerobic activities like yoga, tai-chi, hiking, or any outdoor activity.
