The holidays usually mean family gatherings, home cooked meals, and lots of delicious goodies. We have stressed time and time again that a Paleo lifestyle does not involve deprivation. Instead, it is all about moderation during special occasions like holidays and other celebrations. But you don’t want to blow your whole diet by gorging on cakes, pies, and sweet potatoes all season long. So how can you eat Paleo during the holidays while not depriving yourself of holiday treats?

Everything in Moderation

If you want a cookie or two, have them. If you are craving some chocolate, eat some. If you just can’t help yourself when you are faced with loads of cakes and pies, have a slice. The key is to not eat the entire box of cookies or the whole candy bar or pie. Have enough to satisfy your taste buds and make you feel decadent for a few moments. After that, put the fork down. If you have a sweet tooth, be strict with yourself after you have had a taste of sugary goodness. If you love carbs, have a small portion of mashed potatoes and call it quits. Self-control goes a long way here!

Balance It All Out

When you know that you are going to a family gathering or a get-together at a friend’s house during the holidays, eat smart beforehand. This will help to counteract any damage you may do later on. Eat a salad, lots of veggies, maybe an egg or two, and drink tons of water and/or tea before the party. Then you can have a few small treats later and you won’t feel as guilty. Plus, your stomach won’t be full from overeating earlier in the day.

What if You Overdo It?

Let’s face it: Some of us don’t have as much self-control as others, especially when it comes to sugar. So what if you totally overdo it and eat all kinds of sugary snacks and high-carb foods until you’re stuffed to an oblivion? Well, first of all, don’t beat yourself up. It may be easy to let the negativity flow and put yourself down for ignoring your Paleo diet and eating everything in sight. Secondly, remember that it’s just one incident. The next day, you can wipe the slate clean and start again. You might even consider some detox dieting after a binge like that. But remember: You are human. Learn from your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them on other holidays and get-togethers.

It’s possible to still follow your Paleo lifestyle during the holidays. Just allow yourself a little leeway and don’t be too hard on yourself if you overdo it!
